"My identity is found in my process and it's found in God is where I found myself going. And now when I play the game, I'm so free and I just take flight every time I play. And it's something that I couldn't have done without the mentorship of Seth and Brooks."
Riley Gaskins is a dedicated baseball player who, for the past year, has been training with Soul Throwers, a company renowned for its genuine approach to player development and infectious love for the game. Soul Throwers, found at www.soulthrowers.com, focuses on nurturing not just athletic ability but also the mental and spiritual aspects of the game, helping athletes like Riley unlock their full potential.
Before joining Soul Throwers, Riley was stuck in a rut. His pitching velocity hovered between 84-86 MPH, and he was constantly battling pain. Beyond the physical limitations, Riley faced significant mental hurdles. He struggled with a fear of failure, a fragile confidence, and an ego that often dictated his performance. His identity was too closely tied to his on-field results, leading to spirals of negative thinking and a lack of freedom in his play.
"When I first came to them, I was 84, 86. And a couple times this past spring I hit 90 and I was 88, 89 consistently every single outing. And on top of that I was in pain throwing 84, 86 and then I was throwing 88, 89, 90 and I was throwing every single inning. I was healthy, I was recovering."
Riley chose Soul Throwers because of the genuine connection he felt with Seth and Brooks, and their unique training philosophy. He was particularly drawn to their emphasis on isometrics, plyometrics, and functional strength, a methodology he had previously encountered and valued. Soul Throwers' approach went beyond physical training, delving into mental fortitude and spiritual growth. They helped Riley understand that true progress comes from within, fostering a mindset of surrender and process-oriented thinking.
"Every answer you're searching for is already there within you. My job as a coach, this is just to help you realize it, to help you see it."
The transformation Riley experienced with Soul Throwers was profound. Physically, his velocity saw a significant jump, consistently hitting 88-89 MPH and even touching 90 MPH on several occasions. Crucially, this increase came with improved health and recovery, allowing him to throw nearly 100 innings without any arm or body problems. Mentally, Riley's confidence became unwavering, no longer affected by bad outings or external opinions. He learned to observe his emotions rather than be a victim of them, leading to a more positive train of thought and a newfound freedom in his play.
One of the most remarkable results was Riley's first spring outing after working with Soul Throwers: a five-inning no-hitter where he experienced a true "flow state." This ability to drown out the noise and focus solely on the present moment became a consistent part of his game. Riley now views baseball and training through a new lens, understanding the importance of distributing his energy effectively and focusing on the compound interest of consistent effort.
"My very first spring outing ever was after working with Seth. I joined, I joined them in the fall, like October, worked with them October, November, December. And then I pitched my first game in January, or I think it was late January. I threw a no hitter, threw a five inning no hitter and threw like 68 pitches. And it was the first time I've ever experienced flow state."
